Happy Earth Day!

it's earth day, so be sure to do something green today and every day! not sure how or what to do? here are five things you can start with now to be a little more green:

get the lint out
cleaning out the lint filter of your clothes dryer before drying each load reduces energy use by up to 30 percent! as with the washer, waiting till you have a full load saves lots of energy.

reduce
it's pretty simple: use less. period. all you have to do is re-think some of your habits. for example, you don't always need a fresh sheet of paper to make a list. instead, grab something like a junk- mail envelope and scribble on the blank part of it. if you do have to use a whole sheet of paper, make to use both sides of it. also, don't print if you don't have to. send out invites by e-mail. you'll save paper, postage and time.

don't waste water
40 percent of the water used in the home goes down the toilet. a low-flow toilet can cut the amount you use by half or more (don't worry-- it works just as well). a low-tech alternative: put a brick or plastic milk jug filled with pebbles in your tank. the space it takes up reduces the amount of water needed to fill the tank back up, so you'll save water-- and money-- with each flush.

pump up your tires
keeping tires properly inflated can contribute to reducing global warming and lead to cleaner air. if all american drivers kept their tires at the recommended pressure, it would save about 4 million gallons of gas a day (not to mention tires would last longer, too).

eat less meat
meat production takes a lot more energy and resources than growing vegetables or grains. now, if you love eating meat, seriously, don't stop reading just yet. you don't have to become a vegetarian to make a difference: try eating just one meatless meal a week. if every american had one meat-free day per week, it would reduce emissions as much as taking 8 million cars off the roads!

  1. Hey Monique, this is a great post, excellent recommendations. Earth Day should be everyday, it is good that there is at least one day to spread awareness. Here are some suggestions on what you can do to help the Earth: http://www.toptentopten.com/topten/things+to+do+on+earth+day, you can add your own suggestions.
