Stand-Out Red Carpet Trends from the 2009 MTV Movie Awards

MAX Factor sponsored a Movie Award Show viewing party last weekend and makeup artist Jake Bailey shared some of his thoughts on the trends that were present on the red carpet: "people were making bold but simple choices with their makeup looks", he said.

"there were two standout looks i saw walk the carpet: a smokey, dramatic eye against a glowing, clean complexion paired with a nude lip for an effortless look, and quite a few girls were rockin' a bright lip, some with a classic inspiration and others edgy and fun- i loved it!"

stars, including Leighton Meester, Hayden Panettiere, Miley Cyrus and Anna Farris, all looked beautiful with a smokey eye and nude lip. for a variation on the classic smokey eye, Jake suggests to try doing the look with color for a summery, modern twist:

"a lighter green shade paired with aubergine is a beautiful combination while navy blue brings a hint of color to the traditional smokey eye look. choosing a shade with a little shimmer helps to keep it from getting too dark, and always top off any smokey eye with two coats of dark black mascara – my go-to is MAX Factor's 2000 Calorie Extreme Lash Plumper."

"for this season, bright bold lips are a great look that anyone can wear and we saw it all over the MTV red carpet on Cameron Diaz, Ashley Greene, Lauren Conrad and the look i created for Lo Bosworth! a simple eye and flawless skin is always a great pairing with a bold lip color – sometimes all you need is a really great lip!"

"to do this stick with light and bright shades for the season to keep the look fresh-- my favorites from MAX Factor's Vivid Impact Lipcolor line are Sweet Tart, Rose Rage and Ms. Terious.

both of these red carpet looks work well for summer, so have fun and be fabulous!

Summer Beauty Trend: Bold Eyes

many models strutted their stuff on the Spring/Summer runways wearing a bold eye of some sort. everything from a splash of color to smeared raccoon eyes let us know that it would be ok to go bold, even in the warm season. i am so loving this trend, since of course i'm all about eye makeup-- ha!

bold blue-green eye makeup and soft waves at Gucci
"the hair was strong with a sense of mystery," says Kerastase stylist Luigi Murenu. he applied mousse for added volume, curled the hair from mid-shaft to the ends and finished with a shine spray. for the eyes, Pat McGrath layered a combination of green shadows (Make Up For Ever Flash Color Pot in Turquoise, CoverGirl shadow in Turquoise Tempest and Max Factor shadow in Moody Mint) on the upper lids, and completed the look with black liquid liner, black mascara and individual false lashes.

raccoon eyes and straight hair at Matthew Williamson
with a rock & roll edge, the Matthew Williamson show featured a perfect look fitting to the theme. created by makeup artist Charlotte Tilbury, the eyes were rimmed with black MAC eye pencil and dark shadow for an all-around smoky eye. stylist Paul Hanlon kept the hair simple with oil spray and a flat iron.

smoky eyes, pale lips and rolled hair at Carolina Herrera
"the look is dramatic with a softness to it," says makeup artist Diane Kendal, who created a strong eye and a contrasting soft pink lip. using a MAC eye kohl in Smolder (black), she lined the eyes and blended it into the crease. the lips were layered with MAC lip conditioner and Bubbles lipstick. the hair, created by Orlando Pita for T3, contrasted with the sophisticated clothes in the collection. he parted the hair off-center and then rolled it away from the face, twisting it around the head and securing with bobby pins.

Golden Globe Red Carpet Trends Courtesy of L'Oreal Paris

now that the holidays are over, it's time to gear up for award season! the Golden Globes are up first, and i knew you'd love the insider scoop on beauty trends you'll be seeing this year!

this year for the 2009 Golden Globe Awards, L’Oreal Paris consulting makeup artist Collier Strong is providing his expert tips and the latest trends on how to look red carpet ready. this year, it’s about being bold and beautiful— even if you’re on a budget!

first trend: focus on the lips!

Collier says, "it’s all about a beautiful bold lip! whether it’s warm or cool, a bold, opaque, red lip has a very sexy yet romantic feel. the eyes are as glamorous or neutral as your wardrobe dictates. during the day, eyes are kept simple; at night, opt for a darker look. either way, eye makeup should be blended beautifully and brows should be perfectly groomed for an elegant look. finish the eyes with long, beautiful lashes. pair this look with clean, glowy makeup, achieved with foundation, concealer and powder. for cheeks, use a complementary color to the red of the lip that works with your skin tone. apply on the apples of the check for a pop of color."

second trend: use color on the eyes!

Collier says, "whether it’s a wash of color or a bold, dark statement, using color on the eyes looks gorgeous. try a beautiful violet, blue or dark purple, or coordinate your eye color with your clothing. try using color on the upper lids only, or on the upper lids and under the lower lash line. tou can even add a hint of color on the inner corners and under the eye…just make sure the edges are blended out beautifully. think of watercolors and softness…that’s what makes this color work! use a complementary lip and cheek color for softer eye makeup shades and a transparent lip and cheek look when using bolder eye colors."

third and final trend: it’s all about the metallics!

Collier says: "i love a dark, dramatic, metallic eye in black, dark brown, navy or burgundy. it’s very sexy and a great look for an evening party or event. start with a dark liner that matches your shadow at the base of the lash. apply a dark metallic shadow on the lid, up to the crease. lightly run a little metallic shadow under the lower lashes. use a lighter metallic shadow on the brow bone and on the inner corners of the eye. for a really shimmery effect, you can add an extra highlighter over the entire eyelid. finish the eyes with dramatic, sweeping lashes. pair this look with matte, satin skin and keep lips and cheeks very neutral."

great tips, right? and these looks can be used with any brand. you can get a head start trying the trends out (one at a time, of course). you'll head out to your new's years party looking fabulous! i'm going to try them out myself; stay tuned for the results!

want to meet Collier in person? if you're in the area, he'll be at the L’Oreal Paris retail store (i love that place!), located in the Beverly Center, los angeles, to discuss red carpet trends on january 8 (that's this thursday)! i might go, so you should consider it too!

My Interview with Makeup Artist Jake Bailey, part one

i recently has the opportunity to interview Max Factor makeup artist Jake Bailey, and pick his brain about his favorite trends, how we ladies can update our makeup look for the season, common makeup mistakes, and more!

Jake was kind enough to not only give his advice, but also recommends the (inexpensive) Max Factor products he would use to create certain looks!

there is a lot of info, so this will be a mini-series-- keep visiting BGM for more with Jake!

my first question question was what is your favorite makeup trend for this season?

JB: "i love a metallic eye paired with a nude lip. it is a great night-time look for winter".

ahh, a man after my own heart--hubby, if you read this, you know what i mean!-- i love metalics, and i always focus on my eyes when it comes to makeup looks.

here’s Jake's advice on how to get this sparkling winter look:

max factor by beauty girl

*play up eyes using the MAX Factor Vivid Impact Eye Shadows in Two Cents. apply the dark bronze end of the duo all over the eye lid, up to the crease. follow by lining the eye lid with the gold end of the duo and then blending the two shades together for a multidimensional sheen.

*to finish the eye look apply 3-4 coats of a dark black mascara to the upper and lower lashes for a look, like MAX Factor Volume Couture Mascara.

*to compliment the eye, use a nude gloss such as MAX Factor MAXalicious Glaze Lip Gloss in Weekend Getaway or Champagne Bath for super shine with a hint of shimmer.

*for a twist on the nude lip try one of the subtle pink/red-based glosses. the color will still look very neutral which complements the metallic eye, but adds just a bit of extra drama to the look!

next time, Jake will give some simple tips on how to update your makeup for winter! stay tuned...

90210: new season, new beauty trends!

like the new series, 90210*, there is a buzz around the upcoming fall beauty trends! if you've looked through even one beauty magazine this month, you know there are a lot of choices, but as you know, i'm here to help:

backstage at a ny fashion week 2008 show

don't be overwhelmed: from dark lips, to dramatic colorful eyes, which will you choose?

sometimes when there are so many options put in front of us, we have no idea what to choose. why not take inventory of what you do have and what you like. think about the beauty trends that have caught your attention, and go to a makeup counter to try out the colors and looks. once you decide what you like, maybe pick one or two products to incorporate into the old routine. trust me, sometimes this small change makes a world of difference!

luminous skin is in: no matter what look you go for, your skin should look it's best.

faking a flawless face is now easier than ever with all of the fabulous formulations of products available. prime your skin to get longer wear out of your foundation, and why not try out an illuminizer to give your skin extra luminosity? Duwop Doubleglow7 offers both of these benefits. worn under makeup, it acts as a primer, creating the perfect canvas for flawless foundation application, and when worn over makeup it gives the skin that "oomph" that you might get after a day at the spa. also try LORAC Oil-Free Luminizer or bareMinerals All-Over Face Color

choose the features you want to highlight: lips or eyes

unless your getting ready for a costume party, it's never a good idea to overwhelm your face. that's why there are so many products- you have a new choice everyday!

for lips- this season both dark and light lips are chic. unlike spring when the colors are soft and pretty, you have the option to go with your own mood. try a bold color like Boots No. 7 Moisture Drench Lipstick in Tulip. if you're feeling more in the mood for a nearly nude lip, try Estee Lauder High Gloss in Tan.

for eyes-- there are so many choices this season! smokey eyes are fabulous using traditional black, but rich browns and greys are great for daytime. metallics and bright colors can also take front and center to give the face a burst of light and color. try Clinique Color Surge in Eye Shadow in Slate, Nars Single Eyeshadow in Galapagos or HiP High Intensity Pigments Bright Shadow Duo in Showy

don't forget your cheeks: soften your look or add new dimension

though blush isn't as emphasized when it comes to talking about fall beauty, it is a must-have no matter what season. a beautiful flush gives your skin life, so don't leave it out! if your afraid of blush or don't know how to use it, start with a sheer or buildable color.

when you are going bold with your look, a softer tone looks best, try Chanel Powder Blush in Horizon. a more punched-up color can add drama to a more shimmery, sheer look. try MAC Mineralize Blush in Merrily

don't feel bad if it doesn't all work for you: safe can be a good thing

not every trend will fit into your lifestyle, and not every trend will make you feel your best. so what if you always love a nude lip? keep you look updated by trying different variations on your favorite look. experiment, have fun! that's what makeup is all about, and it's always changing, so we always have new choices!

if you've noticed, this season's makeup is all about extremes, dark and light, bright and muted, shimmery and matte. so have fun with it, take your time and you'll end up with some fabulous new products to get you through the season.
