expert tips for creating a perfect at-home bath

did you know that immersing the body in water has been medically proven to be a very relaxing, therapeutic and a complement to a healthy lifestyle? you can find luxurious baths the Lapis Spa in the Fontainebleau Miami Beach where they offer water therapy in various ways and at varied temperatures; the deep muscle relaxation associated with a good hot bath helps to reduce cramps, tension headaches and improves muscle elasticity. this process is similar to a massage and beneficial for everyone, from athletes to those who sit at a desk all day. it has even been said that taking a bath takes you back to a time when you were in the womb, thus creating a comforting and relaxing environment.

with winter in the air and the stress of the holidays just around the corner, a bath is certainly something that will aid in relaxing. i admit, i don't remember the last time i took one, but since receiving the following tips i have to share with you, i'm thinking it's about time i take one soon…

many thanks to Josie Feria, director of Spa at Lapis {located at The Fontainebleau Miami Beach}, for  sharing these helpful tips to create the ultimate at-home soaking experience. take a look…

bath temperature
a warm bath is best for relaxing the body with the ideal water temperature being 92 degrees fahrenheit. "test the water by using your wrist, not your hand, as it's a better gauge of how the water will feel once your entire body is submerged."

use scented bath oil
Feria recommends floral scents like lavender, jasmine, iris and rose since they are associated with relaxation and can help to ease you into a relaxing state quicker. "adding oils to the tub {when the bath is halfway full} will help them disperse evenly throughout the water."

body scrub
most people are used to being active all the time, so when they get in the tub their minds start racing and they become unable to relax. engage your mind by gently massaging your body with a sponge and body scrub; as the scrub buffs away dryness, your thoughts can move to something less stressful.

closing your eyes
it's important to close your eyes during the bath to enter deep relaxation, so anything that forces you to keep your eyes closed is a great. "try cold cucumbers, an icy compress or eye pads which have been soaked in chilled chamomile tea."

bath salts
if you've had a tough workout, bath salts are like external muscle relaxants. soreness, pain or swelling are reduced, along with inflammation and stiffness, when using bath salts. they also help detoxify skin and increase circulation which helps to ease tension and revitalize the body.

candles
bright bathroom lights tell your body its go-time ~ not bath time. instead, light a few candles and place them around the room and on the edge of the tub.

cold water
if you’ve set your water temp right {somewhere between steamy and very warm}, you should be feeling quite toasty in the tub. a warm bath raises your body’s core temperature, so you’ll start sweating. Josie says, "before getting into the tub, set a bowl of ice water and a washcloth next to you and use it as a cold compress on your forehead or the nape of your neck to help keep you refreshed throughout the bath time. i also grab a tall bottle of San Pellegrino and force myself to drink the whole thing to hydrate."

bath robe/nice bath sheets
"nothing jolts you out of a zen state like going from a warm, luxe bath to a measly, threadbare robe or old dingy towel. get a plush terry cloth robe or fluffy towels that allow you to feel warm and comfortable."

multitask
make the most of your bath by using the time to also give yourself a face and hair treatment. both the skin and hair respond very favorably to the moist environment created by a steamy bath. to cleanse your face, apply a clay mask to the skin avoiding the eyes, allow to remain on the skin for 7-10 minutes then remove gently with wet washcloth. to soften and hydrate your hair, apply conditioner or hair mask to wet hair then cover in plastic cap and hot towel and allow the conditioner or mask to remain on hair for duration of bath for 15- 20 minutes. wash and rinse thoroughly.

music
"play relaxing music to sooth your mood and aid in the process of relaxation. visualization is also a great tool to enhance relaxation in the bath," says Josie. complimented by music, visualization exercises can transport you to your own private nirvana…caribbean beaches anyone?

relax afterwards
leave the smart phone alone for an hour or so and just enjoy time for yourself. get a glass of tea and read or listen to music. want more coziness? "heat a towel in the microwave and wrap around your neck and take a deep and well-earned nap."

thank you again to Josie Feria for these fabulous tips!

 if ever i'm in miami…

so, tell me ~ which of these suggested tips will you, {or maybe do you already} incorporate into your bath time? any fave products you include in your ritual? share in the comments!

beauty recipe: oatmeal foot mask

the fall season has officially started, so i'm sure many of you have already pulled out your favorite booties, boots and ballet flats, all of which cover up those feet and toes you meticulously kept looking fabulous for the past several months…

but just because your feet will be covered, you shouldn't neglect them!

i live in socal, so i see my feet and toes a lot more than most in the fall and winter months {i love peep-toes}. i love to pamper my feet between pedicures with at-home treatments, and you can too. this easy-to-do recipe, courtesy of Skyy Hadley, owner of As U Wish Nail Spa, is a fabulous way to bring luxury to your feet without taking a trip to the salon.

take a look...

Meal for the Heels Mask

1. mix 1 cup of regular oatmeal and 1/2 cup of regular milk into a small pot.

2. heat up over the stove, stir until cooked.

3. add 2 tablespoons of sugar to thicken the mixture, and then let it cool off a bit.

4. once the mix has reached desired temperature and thickness, apply to feet.

5. leave on for 5 - 10 minutes.

6. oatmeal soothes dry, itchy or irritated skin, and the milk acts as an exfoliant to help slough away dry and dead skin cells.

7. apply with a moisturizer, like pure shea butter, a a final step to moisturize.

hope you'll try this recipe soon, beauties ~ happy autumn!

celeb manicurist Skyy Hadley's simple pedicure tips for sandal-ready feet

bonjour, beauties…

hope your week has been fabulous! i recently received a simple recipe and tips from Skyy Hadley {beauty expert, celebrity manicurist and owner of As “U” Wish Nail Spa in new jersey} for getting your feet pretty and sandal-ready as the weather warms up and knew you'd love the info, too.

these tips are simple and oh-so pampering, so i hope you'll take the time to give yourself a treat!

take a look...

Skyy Hadley
pedicure station at As U Wish salon

rehydrate and prevent your heels from cracking…

to prep feet for the warmer months ahead, Skyy offers this milk bath recipe for adding moisture back into the heels and skin:

ingredients:
 1/2 cup hot water
1 cup of milk
a spoonful of sugar

mix together in a large bowl; soak feet for at least 10 minutes.

Skyy adds this tip: "working a foot scrub into your heels is a great way to remove dead skin. avoid using pumice stones since they trap bacteria and try using a diamond file instead."

once feet are fully exfoliated, continue with your milk soak pedicure by rinsing and following with a non-greasy lotion {moisturizing products like shea butter, light oil, or vaseline can be used to moisturize the heels and help prevent cracking}. choose a fab color and paint your toes. if you have blisters, leave them for the professionals {you'll end up doing more harm than good if you try to pop them}.

ensure long-lasting color and shine…
Skyy says: "a clear top coat is your best friend. be sure to apply a top coat on the third day of your pedicure {or manicure}; never use a protein enriched and strengthener product together. using both will cause your polish to crack. try to only apply a nail protein to bare nails. apply a cuticle oil to the base of your toenails {or even when they are already polished}, focusing around the cuticle area to hydrate and bring moisture into the skin, helping the polish last longer."

how often to get a pedicure…
"you can never care for your feet too often," says Skyy, "but it isn’t necessary for weekly pedicures either. once every 2 weeks is sufficient during the warmer months."

many thanks to Skyy Hadley and her great tips ~ our feet will be ready for our favorite sandals in no time!

beauty review: EYES by ToGoSpa {formerly Eyedews}

EYES by ToGoSpa {formerly known as Eyedews} have been pampering my eyes for the past couple of weeks and what treat they are! these at-home, spa-inspired gel treatment pads work by stimulating circulation and production of new, youthful skin cells.

the pads, once applied, are activated by the body's temperature and are packed with a fabulous combination of natural, high-density marine collagen, enzymes, amino acids, natural marine minerals, trace elements, proteins and vitamins. all of these ingredients have worked quite well together, and leave my eyes looking more awake and youthful ~ love!

other benefits i've noticed: the skin around my eyes look more relaxed, calm and moisturized; they also de-puff, reduce irritation, and leave my skin well-hydrated, so the appearance of dryness surrounding my eyes has been reduced {keeping fine lines away!}...

you'll also be happy to know that EYES can be used anytime and anywhere. they're a bit slippery coming out of the package, but they stay put once they've been applied.

what else can i say about these other than you should definitely give them a try! they come in 3 "flavors": Soothe {ice water}, Lift {green tea} and Firm {pomegranate; not pictured}…

beauty review: Murad Essential-C Cleanser + Intensive-C Radiance Peel

let's face it, the environment isn't exactly our friend when it comes to our skin health. in fact, it's a big enemy. from sun damage to pollution, there isn't a day that goes by that our precious skin isn't exposed to these harsh elements {and more depending on where you live, work, etc}. top it off with possible dark spots from aging, acne or hormone imbalances, and what's a person to do?

well, i say try using Murad Essential-C Cleanser twice a day for about six weeks along with Intensive-C Radiance Peel 1-2 times per week, and you'll see fabulous, more even-toned, hydrated skin.

this, at least, has been my experience with these brilliant products.

the Cleanser is antioxidant-rich and rids skin of impurities, but leaves skin hydrated and feeling amazing. not only do i enjoy its yummy citrus-basil scent {thanks to mandarin orange, grapefruit and basil essential olis}, but i've noticed a healthier, brighter appearance to my skin. i've also enjoyed seeing the benefits of the Radiance Peel, using it weekly, improving the look and texture of my skin.

the peel doesn't irritate my skin, but rather has given my skin a radiance that i more than greatly appreciate these days! it contains a powerhouse mix of ingredients including glycolic acid to exfoliate, vitamin C and indian fig to protect and clarify; myrtle extract helps to support collagen production ~ love it!

needless to say, i'm happy using these products in my skincare routine. if you're looking give your skin a makeover, definitely give these a try and get ready to say hello to a more gorgeous, glowing complexion.

video: how to get the perfect salon manicure at home

doing my own manicures at home not only saves me money {and since i like to change my polish 2-3 times a week, i guess you could say a lot of money}, but is a way for me to relax, pamper myself and end up with a result i'm more than happy with...

these days nail polish is like lipgloss, a must-have, low-cost beauty indulgence that makes it easy to change up your look. but if you're not confident in your diy mani skills, i have something for you...

this video from Mary of A Love Tart was brought to my attention by my blogging friend, Ashley, who herself is a nail polish lover {butter london and deborah lippmann are among her fave brands} and gives herself amazing manicures frequently...

so of course, i had to pass this on!

this tutorial features splendid tips, tricks and product recommendations {CND Stickey, Seche Vite and Sally Hansen Cuticle Remover are all featured, and happen to be my personal faves} to teach you how to give yourself a better-than-salon manicure. this is a must-see, beauties!!

enjoy and leave a comment to share your thoughts...

p.s., Mary mentions in this video how to do a post-manicure clean-up on cuticles ~ check it out here! :)

My Favorite Drugstore Beauty Buys 3.20.09

it's the first day of spring! the weather here in socal is warming up, and while some of my friends are ecstatic, i can't help but wish the cool weather would stick around forever-- ha! you could say me and extreme heat are not friends. my kids love it of course, because that means we can go swimming-- always a good thing. :)

this week's beauty buys are fun little goodies that i sometimes use to create a pampering mini spa day at home. take a look...

Queen Helene Mint Julep Masque is a mask with kaolin and zinc oxide to absorb oil and impurities, and the sulfur is great for clearing up and keeping breakouts under control. i like to use this about once a week in the winter because it can be a little too drying, but when the weather begins to warm up and my skin starts to freak out because of the weather change, i use it twice a week.

de-luxe BAIN Instant Manicure & Body Polish works fabulously as a shower scrub, leaving skin feeling amazingly soft and moisturized, and is great as a quick manicure treatment. there are more expensive products like this, but this one works just as good, and the price actually makes it better!

Olay Body Thermal Pedicure Foot Treatment gives my little tootsies a warm treat and helps extend the time between my pedicures (love that!). white sand, pumice, and micro-crystals smooth away dead skin, and moisturizers like shea butter leave them soft and looking great.

have a great weeekend!

review: Crabtree & Evelyn Aromatherapy Distillations Clarifying Body Mud Treatment

i love a good spa treatment, but i really don't have time or money to do it as often as i'd like. thankfully i can give myself a spa treatment at home, at my convenience and without driving anywhere, with Crabtree & Evelyn's Aromatherapy Distillations Clarifying Mud Treatment.

on saturday i indulged in an at-home spa day complete with this great little product that left my skin glowing and feeling smooth. yes, this is a body mask, so whether you do it alone or have help, i recommend prepping everything before you apply it (lay down towels, have blankets ready to drape over yourself, and be sure your radio or tv it tuned where you want it).

in the kit are three body wraps and a wooden applicator, so it keeps the mess to a minimum. the body wrap is like a plastic housecoat that, on me, comes to about mid-calf (i'm 5'3"). when i layed down, i really enjoyed the way this smelled (very invigorating) and i could feel the treatment working as i relaxed. at times it did feel like a cool sensation, and i assume it's because of the spearmint. after about 25 minutes, the mask had dried. wetting the mask a bit in the shower, the mask became a great exfoliator as i rubbed it around, thanks to the coconut shell and passionflower seeds in the mud.

needless to say, this is a great product and i can't wait to do this treatment again!

90210: new season, new beauty trends!

like the new series, 90210*, there is a buzz around the upcoming fall beauty trends! if you've looked through even one beauty magazine this month, you know there are a lot of choices, but as you know, i'm here to help:

backstage at a ny fashion week 2008 show

don't be overwhelmed: from dark lips, to dramatic colorful eyes, which will you choose?

sometimes when there are so many options put in front of us, we have no idea what to choose. why not take inventory of what you do have and what you like. think about the beauty trends that have caught your attention, and go to a makeup counter to try out the colors and looks. once you decide what you like, maybe pick one or two products to incorporate into the old routine. trust me, sometimes this small change makes a world of difference!

luminous skin is in: no matter what look you go for, your skin should look it's best.

faking a flawless face is now easier than ever with all of the fabulous formulations of products available. prime your skin to get longer wear out of your foundation, and why not try out an illuminizer to give your skin extra luminosity? Duwop Doubleglow7 offers both of these benefits. worn under makeup, it acts as a primer, creating the perfect canvas for flawless foundation application, and when worn over makeup it gives the skin that "oomph" that you might get after a day at the spa. also try LORAC Oil-Free Luminizer or bareMinerals All-Over Face Color

choose the features you want to highlight: lips or eyes

unless your getting ready for a costume party, it's never a good idea to overwhelm your face. that's why there are so many products- you have a new choice everyday!

for lips- this season both dark and light lips are chic. unlike spring when the colors are soft and pretty, you have the option to go with your own mood. try a bold color like Boots No. 7 Moisture Drench Lipstick in Tulip. if you're feeling more in the mood for a nearly nude lip, try Estee Lauder High Gloss in Tan.

for eyes-- there are so many choices this season! smokey eyes are fabulous using traditional black, but rich browns and greys are great for daytime. metallics and bright colors can also take front and center to give the face a burst of light and color. try Clinique Color Surge in Eye Shadow in Slate, Nars Single Eyeshadow in Galapagos or HiP High Intensity Pigments Bright Shadow Duo in Showy

don't forget your cheeks: soften your look or add new dimension

though blush isn't as emphasized when it comes to talking about fall beauty, it is a must-have no matter what season. a beautiful flush gives your skin life, so don't leave it out! if your afraid of blush or don't know how to use it, start with a sheer or buildable color.

when you are going bold with your look, a softer tone looks best, try Chanel Powder Blush in Horizon. a more punched-up color can add drama to a more shimmery, sheer look. try MAC Mineralize Blush in Merrily

don't feel bad if it doesn't all work for you: safe can be a good thing

not every trend will fit into your lifestyle, and not every trend will make you feel your best. so what if you always love a nude lip? keep you look updated by trying different variations on your favorite look. experiment, have fun! that's what makeup is all about, and it's always changing, so we always have new choices!

if you've noticed, this season's makeup is all about extremes, dark and light, bright and muted, shimmery and matte. so have fun with it, take your time and you'll end up with some fabulous new products to get you through the season.
