beauty recipe: oatmeal foot mask

the fall season has officially started, so i'm sure many of you have already pulled out your favorite booties, boots and ballet flats, all of which cover up those feet and toes you meticulously kept looking fabulous for the past several months…

but just because your feet will be covered, you shouldn't neglect them!

i live in socal, so i see my feet and toes a lot more than most in the fall and winter months {i love peep-toes}. i love to pamper my feet between pedicures with at-home treatments, and you can too. this easy-to-do recipe, courtesy of Skyy Hadley, owner of As U Wish Nail Spa, is a fabulous way to bring luxury to your feet without taking a trip to the salon.

take a look...

Meal for the Heels Mask

1. mix 1 cup of regular oatmeal and 1/2 cup of regular milk into a small pot.

2. heat up over the stove, stir until cooked.

3. add 2 tablespoons of sugar to thicken the mixture, and then let it cool off a bit.

4. once the mix has reached desired temperature and thickness, apply to feet.

5. leave on for 5 - 10 minutes.

6. oatmeal soothes dry, itchy or irritated skin, and the milk acts as an exfoliant to help slough away dry and dead skin cells.

7. apply with a moisturizer, like pure shea butter, a a final step to moisturize.

hope you'll try this recipe soon, beauties ~ happy autumn!

beautiful recipe: Avocado Pineapple Smoothie

when it comes to my lifestyle and health, clean eating and daily movement {exercise} are a no brainer. like brushing my teeth, i just do it and i honestly just love it. i love to plan ahead and since i've been doing this consistently for years, it's a habit and easy for me; when it comes to food, i choose fresh options most always, rotating seasonal produce as they become available throughout the year, but i basically eat the same things every day.

that last statement is the reason for this post. i not only want to share this other aspect of my life with you, but i think it will help me step out of my own comfort zone and try new variations of foods i already eat and love. :)

these recipes won't just be good for you, but they'll also be delish and will help you feel and look fabulous {think skin, hair, nails}.

this avocado pineapple smoothie is a gorgeous example...

~ anti-inflammatory, packed with essential fatty acids, not to mention super yummy, this smoothie is a fabulous way to promote detoxification, healthy skin, and nervous system support. bonus: the healthy fats help stabilize your blood sugar! ~

this recipe is one i found via barre3.com {one of my fave workout/lifestyle resources!} courtesy of Andrea Bemis, chef, owner of Tumbleweed Farm {located in Hood River, OR}, and writer of the fabulous blog Dishing Up The Dirt.

celeb manicurist Skyy Hadley's simple pedicure tips for sandal-ready feet

bonjour, beauties…

hope your week has been fabulous! i recently received a simple recipe and tips from Skyy Hadley {beauty expert, celebrity manicurist and owner of As “U” Wish Nail Spa in new jersey} for getting your feet pretty and sandal-ready as the weather warms up and knew you'd love the info, too.

these tips are simple and oh-so pampering, so i hope you'll take the time to give yourself a treat!

rehydrate and prevent your heels from cracking…

to prep feet for the warmer months ahead, Skyy offers this milk bath recipe for adding moisture back into the heels and skin:

ingredients:
 1/2 cup hot water
1 cup of milk
a spoonful of sugar

mix together in a large bowl; soak feet for at least 10 minutes.

Skyy adds this tip: "working a foot scrub into your heels is a great way to remove dead skin. avoid using pumice stones since they trap bacteria and try using a diamond file instead."

once feet are fully exfoliated, continue with your milk soak pedicure by rinsing and following with a non-greasy lotion {moisturizing products like shea butter, light oil, or vaseline can be used to moisturize the heels and help prevent cracking}. choose a fab color and paint your toes. if you have blisters, leave them for the professionals {you'll end up doing more harm than good if you try to pop them}.

ensure long-lasting color and shine…
Skyy says: "a clear top coat is your best friend. be sure to apply a top coat on the third day of your pedicure {or manicure}; never use a protein enriched and strengthener product together. using both will cause your polish to crack. try to only apply a nail protein to bare nails. apply a cuticle oil to the base of your toenails {or even when they are already polished}, focusing around the cuticle area to hydrate and bring moisture into the skin, helping the polish last longer."

how often to get a pedicure…
"you can never care for your feet too often," says Skyy, "but it isn’t necessary for weekly pedicures either. once every 2 weeks is sufficient during the warmer months."

many thanks to Skyy Hadley and her great tips ~ our feet will be ready for our favorite sandals in no time!

3 Simple {Thanksgiving-Inspired} Beauty Recipes

thanksgiving is just a day away, beauties! most likely you're looking forward to indulging in your favorite foods, spending time with friends and family and enjoying time off in general.

no matter how many people end up at your gathering, there always seems to be more than plenty of leftovers. Erika Katz, the gorgeous beauty expert and author of Bonding over Beauty, has created some fun, easy and fabulous DIY recipes to turn your holiday extras into an at-home spa day for you and your beauty-loving loved ones.

these recipes are all-natural, will leave you looking amazing...

Banana Cream Pie Mask

sure, with the following ingredients you can make a pie {gluten-free flour for me, please}, but why not use them to also pamper your skin? this mask combats dry skin that comes along with cold winter air.

1 mashed banana
3 tbs. heavy cream
1.5 tbs dark honey
1.5 tbs white flour

to make: mix all the ingredients and put into a pretty jar. when ready to use, apply to face and love the results!

Clementine Hand Scrub

hands also gets dry and brittle from the cold winter {and loads of hand-washing!}, so a gentle hand scrub is always a treat. delicious oranges are rich in vitamin c and alpha hydroxy acids which help to remove dead skin. honey and olive oil moisturize skin, while baking soda acts as a gentle exfoliant.

1 tbs clementine juice
1 tbs honey
1 tbs sugar
1 tbs olive oil

to make: mix together all ingredients; gently wash your hands with the scrub, breath deeply and enjoy this simple beauty ritual. you'll love the difference it makes. :)

Cranberry Mask

yummy cranberry juice is detoxifying for the skin and particularly helpful for those with oily skin, are acne-prone or suffer from psoriasis. cranberries also aide in reducing skin inflammation, redness, and itchy, irritated skin.

1 cup fresh cranberries
1 cup seedless red grapes
2 tsps grapefruit juice
1 envelope unflavored gelatin

to make: mix ingredients until it becomes a paste. cover and refrigerate for 45 minutes to let the mixture thicken. remove from the fridge, apply and let sit before rinsing off for about 10 minutes.

i truly hope you'll take the time to pamper yourself a bit this thanksgiving {if not on the actual day, at least this weekend!}; and do remember, loves, that while life is far from perfect, there's always something to be thankful for!

just do it

today is the big day! get out and vote!

ok, off my soap box and onto some fun stuff....

today i thought i'd offer up some more on nourishing yourself beautiful with these easy tips, suggestions and yummy, healthy recipes. in no particular order--my mind is racing...enjoy!

**when you are stressed, go work out. exercise (walking, running, biking, swimming, etc.) takes your mind off the everyday stresses of work, kids, bills, traffic and the choice to decide who you want to run the country (oh, maybe that's just me...?). also, excercise keeps your immune system under control, so you're sick less.

**don't forget ressitance training! just 20 minutes a day, 2-3 days a week will not only help to burn extra calories, but it will also tone you up and strengthen your bones.

**using anti-aging creams and serums may help, but using sunscreen daily will truly help to fight off those wrinkles. of course, genetics plays a large part in how we age, however, the sun does nothing to slow it down. to make wearing sunscreen easy, buy a moisturizer for your skin type that contains an spf of at least 15. rub not only onto your face, but your neck and chest. you might also consider investing in a lotion with an spf for your arms and hands. remember, also, that if you plan to be out in the sun for long periods of time you should use a higher spf, but reapply every two hours, as a higher spf doesn't mean the protection lasts longer.

**learn something new everyday. it's simple. read the paper and read about a subject you usually are not interested in, try a new recipe, learn to say hello in a different language (other than spanish, french or german), google a country and read about it's culture, or the good old "pick-a-word-out-of-the-dictionary-and-use-it-in-a-sentence-today" works fine.

**sleep! most of us don't get enough of it. we stay up late, get up early and live on caffiene. studies have shown that sleep helps to maintain a healthy weight, keep stress levels low, and it is also the time when our bodies replenish and renew themselves. sleep also helps to keep the brain function at it's best (no more searching... for.........words)

**give someone a hug. you'll feel better no matter how you were feeling before.

**try multi-grain pasta with sweet potatoes and leeks. this recipe is nutritious, packed with protien, and the pasta isn't the base of the meal.

**a great healthy--and fast!--meal is this turkey-garlic stir fry. i love stir frying. it's ipmple, easy and a very healthy way to cook.

**going green is easier than ever now days, and it makes me feel beautiful when i know that i am doing something to help the environment. invest in reusable shopping bags. they are sold almost everywhere now. keep them in your car or in your trunk, so they will be with you on the trip to the store. if you find yourself in the store without them, walk back out to your car to get them (burn some calories, strengthen your bones, reduce stress). some stores will give you money off for bringing in your own bags.

**keep your make-up brushes clean. make-up brushes offer a great way to apply make-up to your face, but can harbor bacteria if not kept clean. i have many brushes--some are for the same purpose, so i wash whichever brushes i use in the morning at night. a simple mild cleanser or baby shampoo will work, but there are products that are made specifically for cleaning your brushes. wet the bristles only, add the cleanser to your hand, and swirl the brush bristles in your hand in a circular motion. if you don't do this often you will see so much product has been lingering in your brush. rinse until the water runs clear, squeeze out excess water and lay the brushes flat to air dry on a paper or cloth towel.

**did you know that your brain needs excercise just like your body? the everyday workload or daily schedule leaves little room for your brain to be challenged. there are many products on the market now that encourage daily brain activities to keep the brain sharp. nintendo launched the DS to not only act as a new way for gamers to play, but also to challenge it's users with games such as Brain Age to train the brain to maintain, and even improve, mental ability, and My Word Coach to expand the vocabulary. my hubby and i gave the pink ds to our daughter for christmas along with the my word coach game (and others), and i found myself playing it everyday. it keeps the mind sharp and working beautifully. another way to train your brain is through a podcast on itunes called BrainReady. it allows you to go on with daily activities and incorporate brain training exercises at the same time by listening. the BrainReady website also has great articles on great foods, drinks and supplements to add to your diet for brain health as well as workbooks and printable worksheets.

**laugh. do i have to explain this one? really, just try it... :)
