hair therapy: Product

Product is the actual name of this great "green" styling aid i have been using that is designed for all hair types and lengths. i think it is a quite unique and memorable name considering all of the other hair products on the market, don't you?

made from all-natural ingredients like shea butter, aloe vera and vitamin E, Product is hand-crafted in extremely small batches (packaged in 1.5oz jars) to ensure quality control. when you rub the paste-like formula between your hands, it melts and glides smoothly over the hair. i love the fact that it's not greasy and it coats my hair, leaving it feeling soft and looking healthy!

if you love "green" products, you're going to love this one! in addition to only containing five ingredients--the other two being beeswax and tangerine oil-- Product protects from harmful UV rays, the packaging is 100% recyclable and is free of parabens, sulfates and petrochemicals.

what makes products natural?

i mentioned in my Botanics Deep Conditioner post yesterday that the word natural is not regulated.

that is mostly true...

i have come to find out that Burt's Bees, and other natural personal care product companies, are working with the Natural Products Association to develop a universally recognized seal that will let consumers know that a product is truly natural.

all products that are labeled "natural" must:
*be made with at least 95% truly natural ingredients.
*contain no ingredients with any potential suspected human health risks.
*use no processes that significantly or adversely alter the purity/effect of the
natural ingredients.

what "natural" is:
*ingredients that come from a purposeful, renewable/plentiful source found in nature (flora, fauna, mineral).
*processes that are minimal and don't use synthetic/harsh chemicals, or otherwise diluting purity.

so, it should be easy enough, right? well...it will be eventually. and even when we have a seal to look for, we should still know what to look for. so here's a list of tips that will help you (and me) shop for natural products while we (patiently) wait for the seal....

1. one natural ingredient doesn't make it all natural. ingredient order on a label is an indication of the quality of that ingredient.

2. be wary of trademarked names with the word natural. products with natural in the name don't always contain natural ingredients.

3. beware of the language. just because an ingredient has a long or scientific name doesn't mean its a chemical. check out cosmeticsdatabase.com for more info about ingredients.

4. watch for phrases like "nature inspired" or "made with natural or organic ingredients. this type of language allows manufactures to position their products as natural or organic without having to include high levels of natural or organic ingredients.

5. there are certain ingredients that should never be used in a product labeled natural. watch for: parabens, sulfates (sodium lauryl/laureth sulfate), petrochemicals (pretrolatum/mineraloils/paraffin), chemical sunscreens (oxybenzone/avobenzone), and phthalates.

now it should be a little easier to decipher between true naturals and the impostors. at least, i hope so....

have a fabulous day!!!

a natural deep conditioner?

i have found a fabulous new deep conditioner! i have so many in line to try, but this is a more natural formula, so i thought i'd give this one a go in time for earth day. Botanics 5 Minute Deep Conditioning Hair Mask is a Boot's brand product. i have recently had a great experience with their Vitamin Mask, so, as many brands want, i decided to try another product.

they describe this product:
this rich creamy hair mask intensively hydrates the hair where it needs it most to leave hair shiny and strengthened with added protection from environmental damage. rice bran protein extract, shea butter and pro-vitamin B5 combine to enrich and moisturise the hair to give it real softness. grape extract protects the hair from the damaging effects of free radicals generated by sunlight, heat styling and environmental pollutants. your hair will radiate softness and shine which lasts.

i have to say that this comes in a big 15.2 ounce container, which is great! after one application, i know i have plenty left for the months to come. this is environmentally friendly because that means less waste!

the consistency of this product is quite odd, though. it feels like a soft, fluffy marshmallow melted. it felt a little lumpy as i stirred my fingers in the product. i was so surprised by this that i had to dip my fingers and stir the product around again to make sure it wasn't my imagination! but as soon as i rubbed it into my hands and applied it, this product melted into my hair, coating each strand (i try to imagine it this way!). i left it in for five minutes--while i shaved my legs, turning the water off to conserve!-- and rinsing it out was so easy. my hair felt soft, but not like anything had been left in it.

after styling my hair, it was left feeling and looking like i really gave my hair a treat! i am so happy with this product. i almost feel guilty that i love it because i have to confess: being made more aware of the environment and living a more green lifestyle, especially lately, i remembered that i hadn't checked the label before i bought and tried this treatment. uh-oh...i had to do some research...

so many times products market themselves as being a natural product, and for the most part, they are. however, sometimes, for the sake of preserving ingredients, brands (like Botanics, as it turns out) will add things called parabens.

so what are parabens? well, they are a group of chemicals that are widely used as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. they can be found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels and personal lubricants. parabens have been found to cause skin irritation, contact dermatitis, or allergic skin reactions. there was also a study showing parabens present in breast cancer tissue samples, this was linked to use of underarm deodorants, but many say there needs to be more research carried out before a causal link between parabens in cosmetics and breast cancer. you might not see the word parabens, but that does not mean they are not there, as these chemicals might be listed as methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben or butylparaben.

so, i guess i can safely say that this ia not an all natural conditioner. and since the word natural is not regulated, there really is nothing i can do. this is a fabulous conditioner, but don't be fooled. it does contain natural ingredients, but there are still unnatural ingredients in it as well.

eco-beauty: Botanics Vitamin Recovery Mask

Boots worked closely with specialists at Kew to identify and incorporate the very best plant ingredients to deliver products that really work. from head-to-toe, Botanics (the natural line from Boots) offers effective treatments for face, hair and body. each Botanics product is packed with powerful plant extracts all of which have proven benefits for you.

this invigorating mask is rich in vitamins to help reduce the signs of fatigue, while boosting moisture levels. it contains gingko extract which acts as an anti-oxidant, protecting the skin from UV damage and helps to maintain skin's elasticity by protecting collagen. pro-vitamin B5 moisturises and softens to leave the skin velvety smooth, while evening primrose oil helps to maintain the skin's health. the perfect pick-me-up for dull and tired skin.

i have to say after using this product, i am a huge fan of it! i woke up looking like i had never lost any sleep. my skin glowed and look radiant. i was so surprised to see it, but i suppose that comes from being promised so much from a few other products that only let me down. so glad this one didn't!

find Botanics Vitamin Recovery Mask at a local Target near you.

Let's Go Green!

the title of this post takes me back to my days as a varsity cheerleader...our school colors were green and white. everywhere we cheered, we almost always made reference to our main color, green. ahh, memories....

now days the term "go green" has a very understood definition of doing and using products that help the environment. it means discovering the "alternative", more natural way to approach the way we clean, travel and live. taking responsibility for the choices we make when it comes to products we buy and resources we use also makes an impact. i especially love this because for may years, i have tried my best to do little things everyday to help.

as earth month continues and earth day (april 22) approaches, think about this: what can you do each day to help the environment? what small change could you make to make sure the planet you live on today will be better for those who live on it tomorrow? will you recycle? ride a bike? buy a reusable water bottle? maybe you'll invest in a hybrid vehicle or plant trees. whatever it is, your help makes a difference!

starting today, Total Beauty begins it's Totally Green Campaign. this promotion will run from now until june 5. each day, seven lucky people will win gift cerificates or eco-friendly brand products. second teir prizes include diamond jewlery (hello!?) and eco-spa trips. the grand prize...drumroll please...a Saturn Hybrid Vue full of eco-beauty products fron Origins, Sephora, Raw Natural Minerals, Tela Beauty Organics and Suki Pure Skincare! wow...

so what are you waiting for? head on over to Total Beauty, find a product to write a reveiew about and be entered into Total Beauty's biggest contest to date! good luck...

and don't forget...go green!

while waxing is the quickest way to remove hair, when it comes to eyebrows, you can't always get the precision that you desire. that is where great pair of tweezers come in.
