summer skincare: Kate Somerville Quench Oil Free Hydrating Serum

Kate Somerville's water-based Quench Oil Free Hydrating Face Serum has been keeping my skin looking fabulous, even as summer temps continue to stay in the higher degrees. this is such a good thing for me, since i do have oily skin {though less so than 10 years ago...you know, because of this aging thing...wink}...

even in the middle of summer, when you may have an excess of shine, it is possible for oily skin to become is dehydrated.

when it comes to taking care of your skin, it's important to change the products in your routine as the seasons change. the goal for every skin type is, of course, to keep skin hydrated year-round. it's especially important for oilier skin types, since hydration {and maintaining balance} actually helps to prevent skin from over-producing oil to make up for the lack of moisture.

i love the lightweight, soothing feeling of the Quench Oil Free formula. it's a fabulous serum that hydrates well and maintains moisture in the skin. since i started using it a couple of weeks ago, i've noticed that my skin looks more balanced and refreshed, even in the later hours of the day. applied morning and night after cleansing {i love her Daily Detox Cleanser}, before moisturizer {like the Oil-Free Moisturizer}, this hydrator also contains skin-loving peptides that aid in decreasing the appearance of fine lines ~ leave it to Kate Somerville to create such a gem of a serum!

if you have oily skin, give your skin a treat and try Quench Oil Free Hydrating Face Serum for yourself. if not, make your way over to the website anyway to discover which of her products and treatments are best for your skin. if you decide to try any of them, trust me when i say: your skin will thank you!

9 skin care products i'm currently loving...

with the start of a new season, it's quite understandable {and actually recommended!} to start a new routine for your skin ~ a seasonal resolution of sorts. the following list includes some of the {many} products i've been using over that past several months for this special round-up. each has wowed me in one way or another. they've proven to be amazing for getting and keeping skin looking fabulous...this season and beyond!

Zelens Z Recovery Intensive Repair Balm + PHA Bio Peel Resurfacing Pads
Dr. Marko Lens has developed a line of high-tech-meets-nature products through his Zelens line, but i have to give special love to the Resurfacing Pads and Repair Balm. the pre-soaked pads contain effective alpha and beta hydroxy acids, as well as more gentle polyhydroxy acids to exfoliate and reveal  a more refreshed, bright tone; to keep skin hydrated and treat any irritation that may occur, Repair Balm is so luxurious and soothing. the silky texture feels delicious on skin and is a fabulous treat at the end of the day.
formulated with copper PCA and calcium PCA, this highly effective moisturizer/sunscreen has helped give my skin a boost. not only does it offer sun protection, but the anti-aging ingredients also aided in smoothing the texture of my skin.

January Labs "Glow and Go" Power Peel Exfoliant
i started using this last fall, and with cinnamon as its star ingredient, it was a perfect fit. i typically use this mask a couple of times a month and it's such a treat, especially when i don't have a lot of time. after 15 minutes, my skin looks and feels refreshed and, yes, glowing.

Algenist Regenerative Anti-Aging Ultra Rich Cream
highly moisturizing, this rich cream is perfect for dry, aging skin. alguronic acid combined with shea butter and vitamin C really delivers a moisture boost. this formula is a bit too rich for my skin, but i found a tiny amount worked well for me when mixed in with another moisturizer when i felt my skin was parched. i use the Ultra Rich Cream in full force on my neck, decollate and hands.

Kate Somerville Exfolikate + RetAsphere 2in1 Retinol Night Cream
the legendary ExfoliKate is a holy-grail favorite of mine and will always be on my must-use list! to get the best looking skin all i can say is you need this. another fabulous product from the skin guru is  RetAsphere ~ it's simply A-mazing! i love the creamy textured night treatment for its ability to moisturize, keep fine lines at bay and even out my skin tone, all with just a thin layer used nightly.

Derma E Evenly Radiant Serum
this treatment is a natural-product lovers' dream! ideal for oily or blemish-prone skin {or as a treatment underneath your favorite moisturizer}, this rich in antioxidants, green tea-infused, gel-textured serum hydrates, fights signs of aging and brightens skin over time with daily use.

Murad Oil-Free Broad Spectrum SPF 30
like ExfoliKate, this sunscreen is a must-have favorite. i highly recommend it because it contains antioxidant-rich pomegranate {attacks free radicals to repair existing sun damage and slow the signs of aging}, is oil-free {no breakouts here}, and leaves my skin looking great all day {the formula dries to a matte finish}. oh, and it smells good, too!

with regular use, all of these goodies will do your skin a world of good.

expert tips to refresh and revive tired skin

happy 2013! did you enjoy your new year celebrations? i sincerely hope so!

my night was definitely low-key. while our daughter danced and partied at her bff's house, and our son watched movies and played games at my mom's, my love and i stayed home. he was sick, but we made the most of our time alone, enjoying a nice dinner and watching a movie {the dark comedy, Bernie, with Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine and Mathew McConaughey}.

while i am happy that i didn't experience a hangover, eat too much or stay out late, i am loving that i can still benefit from the following skin-enhancing tips offered by one of my favorite experts on the subject, Kate Somerville!

fake a good night’s sleep
for an instant pick-me-up, try her fabulous 2-minute facial, ExfoliKate. this best-seller-for-a-reason uses natural fruit enzymes and microbeads to aid in giving skin a glowing, fresh-from-the-Clinic complexion.

don't pick at those spots!
to calm a blemish, wrap an ice cube in a thin cloth or paper towel and rest it on the breakout for a few minutes. the ice will reduce the inflammation and redness.

get a gorgeous glow
inspired by her most sought-after treatment, Kate recommends DermalQuench Liquid Lift Advanced Wrinkle Treatment. this patent-pending formula aggressively combats wrinkles, sagging skin, uneven tone, and dryness. "the oxygen infusion relaxes facial muscles to dramatically smooth and soften, while deep hydration creates a plumping effect and an immediate glow."

treat tired eyes
place two spoons in the freezer for about 15 minutes and use them to apply your favorite eye cream. the cold metal will help depuff and refresh tired eyes.

if you overindulged
detoxify by drinking plenty of water; incorporate beverages such as pure, unsweetened cranberry juice, fresh lemon juice in water and green tea to cleanse, balance and hydrate your system. Kate also suggests to load up on fresh, organic foods such as almonds, avocados, black beans, blueberries, melons, pomegranate, wild salmon, spinach, tomatoes, whole grains, sweet potatoes and yogurt. "your entire body will benefit from a better diet, a fitter figure, increased energy, improved brain function and radiant skin."

i can personally attest to the fact that  a combination of good skincare and maintaining a healthy lifestyle are always the best prescription for looking  and feeling your best! many thanks, Kate, for the tips!

5 Expert Tips for Gorgeous, Glowing Skin

actresses Rachel Bilson and Vera Farmiga flaunt glowing complexions every time they step onto the red carpet. these ladies regularly turn to Dr. Debra Jaliman, board-certified dermatologist {and author of the new book, Skin Rules: Trade Secrets from a Top New York Dermatologist} to keep their skin in top shape.

i'm happy to say that i have 5 tips from the doctor herself, so you and i can also achieving celeb-worthy skin! and because i feel it's my beauty-loving duty, i'll add my "two-cents" with product suggestions. enjoy...

tip #1: remove makeup before going to sleep ~ Dr. Jaliman says, "i cannot emphasize this enough: never go to bed without cleansing your face. if you don't, the results will be clogged pores and breakouts. if you’re really too exhausted to wash your face with water and cleanser, at least have cleansing pads by your bed and use them to wipe makeup off."

cleansing wipes are a must-have for any beauty girl! my faves include MAC Wipes and Neutrogena Make-up Remover Cleansing Towelettes.

tip #2: exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate ~ "even the best skin in the world will look dull if it's not well exfoliated. you can exfoliate on a daily basis with your cotton washcloth or a disposable cotton pad and a cleanser. if you have normal or oily skin, in addition to your daily exfoliation, once or twice a week use something stronger, like a scrub with fine granules or microspheres," advises Dr. Jaliman.

this couldn't be more true! for my oily skin i use a washcloth daily and reach for ExfoliKate by Kate Somerville for more intense exfoliation 2-3 times a week.

tip #3: the wrong makeup can make acne worse ~ "people with acne cannot use heavy foundations and oily concealers, period. i've had several celebrity clients whose acne did not clear up until i personally spoke to their makeup artists -- all that heavy TV makeup was ruining my carefully prescribed skincare regimen. every major makeup company now makes oil-free and non-comedogenic foundations. people with very oily skin can use mineral foundations, which keep skin matte longer."

when it comes to mineral makeup, i love BareMinerals and CoverFX, but i recently started using a powder foundation from a brand called Mia Mariu. they offer fabulous botanical products and a full line of mineral color cosmetics {i'll be featuring my experience soon}.

tip #4: don't wait until wrinkles appear to start using anti-aging products ~ "collagen production starts decreasing in the late twenties, so that's when people should start using retinols, antioxidants and collagen boosters, especially around the eyes," says Jaliman.

when it come to skincare, prevention is always the best {i have my mom to thank for that knowledge}. though, i admit, i thought it was a little silly to begin using anti-aging products when i had no wrinkles in my mid-twenties, but i am definitely glad i did {still no wrinkles at 32!}. when it comes to anti-aging products, my go-to products come from Estee Lauder and L'Oreal.

tip #5: store your makeup and skincare in the fridge ~ ;"the warm, steamy environment of the bathroom makes products deteriorate faster. if you have very expensive creams or have bought several jars of lipsticks that you don't use every day, keep them in the fridge for best results," recommends Dr. Jaliman.

i love this tip! for eye creams, the cold temp of any formula on the skin will help decrease any puffiness; for face creams, especially since it's summer, this makes for a refreshing treat.

hope these tips have taught you something new-- many thanks to Dr. Jaliman! visit her website and stay tuned -- i'll be bringing you my thoughts on her book, Skin Rules soon.

skincare fave: Kate Somerville Daily Detox Cleanser

if you're looking for a refreshing cleanser that will leave your skin looking fabulous, i highly recommend you consider one that has quickly become my favorite: Kate Somerville Daily Detox Cleanser.

full of yummy ingredients {phytic acic, salicylic, glycolic, and lactic acids} to gently exfoliate and detox skin, Daily Detox also washes away dirt, oil and makeup, and nourishes skin without stripping it of essential moisture. the tangerine-citrus scent makes me oh-so happy, and because it's concentrated, a little goes a long way!

Kate Somerville Gives Stars Their Glow for the Golden Globes

happy award season! the Golden Globes were this past weekend, kicking it all off, and let me tell you, i'm loving it! this time of year is a fun time for me time to see my favorite celebs get dressed in their glamorous gowns, hair and makeup looks, and i am just wowed (and sometimes not) by it all.

but it's not just about the makeup, hair or the gown for celebs when they are getting ready for an award event. oh no, there is so much more that goes into it. prepping the skin, for example, is always on the list, and who better than Kate Somerville to to give them the glow that lasts?

Taraji Henson, Kristen Scott Thomas and Debra Messing all went to Kate for their big night, and it definitely paid off! their skin looked amazing, dewy and fresh.

here's a list of treatments these celebs indulge in:

Kate Somerville Signature Facial
designed to deliver healthier, radiant skin, the signature facial is customized to each individual’s needs. the treatment begins with enzymatic exfoliation, necessary extractions and a customized treatment mask follows. the facial finishes with an acupressure massage. skin is left smoother, clearer and healthier than before.

DermalQuench Oxygen Treatment
for unparalleled hydration and that signature glow, DermalQuench is a Kate Somerville favorite. the skin is drenched in a hyaluronic serum and vitamins. oxygen is then applied as the serum soaks into cells for further hydration, healing and conditioning. watch dryness and fine lines disappear and discover a softer, supple complexion.

Kate Somerville "Lift & Glow"
designed to deliver healthier, younger skin, the "Lift & Glow" works on several dimensions/levels of the skin to give it a younger, lifted glow. the muscles of the skin are then stimulated using Microcurrent, to strengthen and lift tired muscles back into their youthful position. this part feels tingly-- but there is a noticeable lift after the treatment is performed. clients witness a lift in the brow, the apples of the cheeks and around the jawline. they are then placed under a white LED light to reduce wrinkles and rejuvenate the skin. the light stimulates cellular renewal, causing the production of collagen and elastin. the skin looks glowing from the inside out and the outside in.

all of these treatments sound amazing and i've always wanted to try the Dermal Quench Oxygen Treatment since learning about it last year.

to keep the benefits of their treatments going, stars use the Kate Somerville "Glow Kit" that includes:

ExfoliKate-- an intensive exfoliant made with papaya and pineapple enzymes for incredibly smooth skin.

Quench Hydrating Serum- the incredibly silky serum that locks in moisture for an utra-hydrated glow.

Deep Tissue Repair Creamthis anti-aging wonder cream reduces redness and minimized fine lines.

review: Kate Somerville Nourish Daily Moisturizer

i say it all the time, hydration is important.

no matter what your age, hydration is the key to keeping skin looking it's best. Kate Somerville Nourish Daily Moisturizer works to give you the hydration you need...

i love the pump-top of the jar that keeps the moisturizer sanitary. this design means i don't ever have to dig my fingers into it...love that!

and speaking of the jar, can it be a prettier color? (oh sorry, i have Friends on the brain) yes, i am partial to pink, and i know it is what's on the inside that counts, but i have to tell you, this looks amazing on the bathroom sink. what girl can resist a pretty package?

all of that aside, this is a great moisturizer. it absorbs quickly, smells wonderful and gives my skin what it needs. and like all of her skincare items, Kate Somerville Nourish aims to give you your best feeling and looking skin.

review: Kate Somerville Purify Exfoliating Cleanser

Kate Somerville's Purify Exfoliating Cleanser leaves your skin feeling fresh and clean with it's peppermint and rosemary extracts. i love this!

give yourself a treat everytime you cleanse your skin! i love the fresh, energizing scent. this foaming cleanser doesn't contain any abrasive particles to exfoliate. it has instead, salicylic and lactic acid, two ingredients that help to exfoliate dead surface cells gently.

another plus: it removes all traces of makeup and oil. when it comes to a cleanser, there is really nothing better than that, right? i mean, at the end of a hot, busy day you need a cleanser to wash it all away...

a visit to Kate Somerville

Kate Somerville services offer clients custom skincare by combining esthetics, medical science and botanical elements with internal skincare for total wellness. cutting edge treatments and products are proven to address everything from aging to acne, and her team of skin health experts (including RN's estheticians and doctors) is ready to give you results.

during the Total Beauty summit last month a small group of us was able to go to Kate's Melrose Place clinic and learn all about her services and get a first look at the newest addition to the facility: the White Room. this expansion features 4000 square feet of additional space featuring a flagship retail/reception, four new (amazingly decorated) treatments rooms, including a dedicated VIP treatment room with a private bathroom and shower, dressing area, vanity and relaxation cove.

being at this clinic, that caters to celebs (Jessica Alba, Kate Beckinsale, Kerry Washington, Dane Cook just to name a few) and "regular" people alike was so fabulous. the attention to detail and the warmth of the clinic made me think it would be a place i would go to regularly if i lived just a bit closer.

i would love to experience the Dermal Quench treatment that combines oxygen, vitamins, and hyaluronic serum delivered through hyperbaric pressure to deliver hydration and age-defying results. it's a relaxing treatment that i sampled on the back of my hand, and i could only imagine how my face would feel after experiencing an entire one hour treatment (aahhh....)

Kate Somerville offers an array of amazing products that i have heard are "life changing". find out more info products and services at KateSomerville.com
